In Touch with MP Earl Dreeshen - May 12
This past week has been a difficult one for all Albertans and all Canadians. Families have been evacuated from their homes, personal possessions have disappeared and sadly lives have been lost in the aftermath. Despite the best efforts and resources of thousands of people, the fires continue to rage on.
The response has been fast and overwhelming. People from across the country opened their homes and their wallets in support of those displaced individuals. By Friday, over $30 million had already been donated to the Red Cross with both Provincial and Federal Governments pledging to match. It is this spirit that will allow the community of Fort McMurray to re-emerge.
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the wildfires as we all hope for an end to the devastation. We have faith that the great people of Fort McMurray will come back strong and please be assured that you have the entire country behind you.
Physician Assisted Dying
On May 3rd I rose in the House of Commons to speak on Bill C-14 which deals with physician assisted dying. I was grateful that I was able to speak and bring the comments I have been hearing in Red Deer – Mountain View to the floor of Parliament. Unfortunately, not all of my colleagues were able to do the same as the Liberal majority stopped debate after only 1/3 of the MPs had the opportunity to speak. You can see my comments on my facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/Earl-Dreeshen-10400775935/
Bill C-14 has been sent to committee and will be returning to the House for third reading. My hope is that the concerns we have regarding conscience rights of physicians, protections for people with disabilities and minors and a focus on palliative care will return in an amended bill. Otherwise, I will have no choice but to vote against it at third reading.
Mobile Office Update
The next mobile office will be in Spruce View on Wednesday May 18th, from 11-2 at the Tivoli Garden Restaurant. Following that we will be in Cremona on June 1st from 10-2 at 112 Railway Avenue (the FCSS Building).
Sincerely your Member of Parliament,
