Statement by Earl Dreeshen, MP for Red Deer on National Aboriginal Day

June 21, 2014

RED DEER – Earl Dreeshen, Member of Parliament for Red Deer, today issued the following statement in celebration of National Aboriginal Day:

“Today we honour the important contributions Aboriginal peoples have made to shape Canada into the great country it is today.

National Aboriginal Day provides all Canadians an opportunity to reflect on the importance of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people and to celebrate their unique culture and traditions. This is also an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal which is fundamental to our national identity and to Canada’s history.

Over the past year, our Government has made significant progress on shared priorities with Aboriginal peoples. We continue to ensure they have access to same opportunities for self-sufficiency and prosperity as every other Canadian, while encouraging the conditions for healthy and safe communities.

Strengthening our relationship with Aboriginal peoples will continue to be a priority of our Government. To achieve this goal we have made key investments that will have a positive impact with tangible results for Aboriginal communities in areas like skills training and development, improvements for the health and well-being of communities and for economic development.

We will continue to build on these accomplishments to support growth in Aboriginal communities. I encourage everyone in Central Alberta to participate in a celebratory event that maybe happening near you today, and to reflect on the important contributions that Aboriginal peoples have given to Canada.

Happy National Aboriginal Day!
